The NY Giants quarterback whose visit to a Morristown pizzeria was scrubbed due to a doubled appearance fee showed up anyway.
With an apology and a plan to make it right.
Coniglio's announced on Monday, Dec. 18 that the 25-year-old Don Bosco grad wouldn't be coming after all on Tuesday, Dec. 19, after his appearance fee jumped from $10,000 to $20,000.
But then, Coniglio's owner Nino Coniglio, got a phone call from DeVito's marketing team.
"They said, 'We are mortified, everyone is mortified by this whole entire thing, and if it's okay with you, we want to come to your place and break bread, and figure out a solution.'"
At 4 p.m., DeVito pulled up to Coniglio's — fresh off a meet-and-greet at Bubbakoo's in Livingston — ate some food, and made old school 1920s sodas.
Notable by his absence was Sean Stellato, the man who got DeVito into this mess in the first place.
"[DeVito] showed up, he apologized, and he said, 'I'm never going to let this happen to any small business again,'" Coniglio said. "I was real proud to shake his hand and look him in the eye. He said, 'This wasn't me.'"
DeVito vowed to do a meet-and-greet sometime in January, with 100 percent of proceeds being donated toward a battered women's shelter and homeless veterans charity, Coniglio said.
